Stack's Bowers May 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 33099

This specimen was lot 33099 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $125. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. 50 Cents, 1947. Ottawa Mint. George VI. PCGS MS-62. Variety with maple leaf and straight "7". This nearly-Choice minor presents dazzling and rather intense iridescent toning upon each side." The 1947 is known with "straight 7" and "curved 7" varieties. This date with a maple leaf added to the reverse was actually struck in 1948 while the new obverse dies were being prepared. The maple leaf variety is quite scarce but the normal 1947 is fairly common tho less so than the issues of the war years.

Recorded mintage: 38,433 plus 424,885 without maple leaf.

Specification: 11.66 g, 0.800 fine silver, .300 troy oz ASW, 29.72 mm diameter.
