Canada 1947 5 cents
This specimen was lot 20609 in Heritage sale 3008 (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $1,437.50. The catalog description[1] noted,
"George VI 5 Cents 1947 Dot, MS66 PCGS. Brilliant luster with a sharp strike and near mark-free surfaces. Very scarce in this condition. Only one piece has been certified finer by PCGS (7/1)."
This specimen is a rare variety of the regular 1947 which has no dot by the date. The 1947 "maple leaf" indicates coins actually struck in 1948 while dies were being altered to drop "IND IMP" from the obverse legend. Canadian five cent pieces for George VI went through numerous changes from the original round, nickel style struck 1937-42 (KM 33). Issues of 1942-44 were brass, 1944-45 were chrome plated steel, then this one, then a similar type without "IND IMP" 1948-50, then back to chrome plated steel 1951-52.
Recorded mintage: 7,603,724.
Specification: nickel, 21.2 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by T. H. Paget and G. E. Kruger-Gray.
