Künker sale 386, lot 5096

This specimen was lot 5096 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €460 (about US$595 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Karl II. 1815-1830. Unter Vormundschaft König Georgs IV. von Großbritannien, 1820-1823. 24 Mariengroschen 1820, MC. R Feine Patina, vorzüglich. (duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Charles, 1815-30, under the regency of George IV of Britain, 1820-23, 24 mariengroschen of 1820. Rare, fine patina, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1820 only and shows George as king of Great Britain rather than Prince Regent. Its silver content was 7/9 of a Prussian or Brunswick thaler (22.27 g, 0.750 fine) or 5/9 of a convention thaler (28.06 g, 0.833 fine) but the SCWC states that it was worth 2/3 of a thaler. This denomination was last struck in 1834.
