Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1818-FR 5 thaler Fr-733
This specimen was lot 6518 in Künker sale 336 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €1,800 (about US$2,356 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Karl II. 1815-1830. Unter Vormundschaft des Prinzregenten Georg von Großbritannien (später Georg IV.), 1815-1820. 5 Taler 1818, FR. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Attraktives Exemplar mit feinem Prägeglanz, fast vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Charles II, 1815-30, under the regency of George, prince of Wales, 1815-20. Five thaler of 1818. Very rare, attractive example with fine luster, about extremely fine.)"
The gold five thaler was introduced in Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel in 1742 and struck until 1834. This type was struck 1816-19 and was equal to a Prussian freidrichs d'or but is much scarcer.
