Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1825-CvC 24 mariengroschen KM-1109
This specimen was part of lot 5574 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), which sold for €1,100 (about US$1,531 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Karl II. 1815-1830. Selbständige Regierung, 1823-1830. 24 Mariengroschen 1825.... AKS 55; J. 238 b; Welter 2993. 5 Stück., Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 59, Osnabrück 2000, Nr. 1760. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Charles II, 1815-30, ruling alone, 1823-30, 24 mariengroschen of 1825. [One of] five pieces, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This type was struck 1824-29 simultaneously with KM 1102, which had the duke's title abbreviated "ZU BRAUNS". The denomination, equal to a gulden or two-thirds thaler, was last struck in 1834. Its silver content was 7/9 of a Prussian or Brunswick thaler (22.27 g, 0.750 fine) or 5/9 of a convention thaler (28.06 g, 0.833 fine) but the SCWC states that it was worth 2/3 of a thaler.
