Künker sale 386, lot 5095

This specimen was lot 5095 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €360 (about US$465 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Karl II. 1815-1830. Unter Vormundschaft des Prinzregenten Georg von Großbritannien (später Georg IV.), 1815-1820. 24 Mariengroschen 1818 FR. Vorzüglich +. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 46, Osnabrück 1999, Nr. 2002. (duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Charles II, 1815-30, under the regency of George IV of Britain, 1820-23, 24 mariengroschen of 1818. Choice extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1815-18 and this is the most common of the four dates. Its silver content was 7/9 of a Prussian or Brunswick thaler (22.27 g, 0.750 fine) or 5/9 of a convention thaler (28.06 g, 0.833 fine) but the SCWC states that it was worth 2/3 of a thaler. This denomination was last struck in 1834.
