Sincona sale 97, lot 1259

This specimen was lot 1259 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, Herzogtum Georg III. 1760-1820. 2 1/2 Taler 1816, Braunschweig. Mit dem Münzmeisterzeichen FR. Sehr selten. (Germany, kingdom of Hannover, George III, 1760-1820, 2½ thaler of 1816, Brunswick mint, with initials FR. Very rare. NGC AU55.)"

This rare type was struck 1816-19 not for Hannover but for the neighboring duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, where Charles II was a minor under the regency of George IV of Great Britain. This denomination was equal to a goldgulden, a lightweight version of a ducat. The last gold 2½ thaler was issued in 1851.
