Künker sale 386, lot 5098

This specimen was lot 5098 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €550 (about US$711 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Karl II. 1815-1830. Selbständige Regierung, 1823-1830. 24 Mariengroschen 1823, CvC. Seltener Jahrgang. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Charles, 1815-30, independent rule, 1823-30, 24 mariengroschen of 1823. Rare date, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This type was struck 1823-29 for Karl II as an independent ruler. Its silver content was 7/9 of a Prussian or Brunswick thaler (22.27 g, 0.750 fine) or 5/9 of a convention thaler (28.06 g, 0.833 fine) but the SCWC states that it was worth 2/3 of a thaler. This denomination was last struck in 1834. Karl II was overthrown and exiled in 1830 but survived until 1873.
