Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73514

This specimen was lot 73514 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1714-HH. Zellerfeld Mint; mm: crossed axes between HH. August Wilhelm. PCGS AU-55. A delightful example of this issue - well-struck, good detail, and attractive argent surfaces sporting a thin, almost golden sienna toning. An attractive and desirable coin. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Includes ticket from Kuenker." This type was struck 1714-30 and is fairly common. Another 24 mariengroschen (KM A812) was struck 1715, 1720, 1724 and is rather scarcer. Twenty-four mariengroschen made two-thirds of a thaler or one gulden.
