Jean Elsen sale 149, lot 1172

This specimen was lot 1172 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €90 (about US$122 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, BRUNSWICK-WOLFENBÜTTEL, Rudolf August et Anton Ulrich (1685-1704), AR 24 Mariengroschen, 1698. D/ Un homme sauvage élaguant un sapin. R/ Valeur dans le champ. Très Beau. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Rudolf Augustus and Anton Ulrich, 1685-1704, silver 24 mariengroschen of 1698. Obverse: a wild man uproots a tree; reverse: value. Very Fine.)"

This type was struck 1685-1704 and is fairly available. The 24 mariengroschen was supposed to be worth two-thirds of a thaler but this one weighs less than half.
