This specimen was lot 73496 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1699. Zellerfeld Mint; mm: three stars. Rudolph August & Anton Ulrich. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, Unc Details. Dav-336; KM-559; Welter-2079. This coin offers a well-sculpted Wild Man and a strong strike. Despite the details grade, an attractive and well-executed example of the type. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This issue of 1685-1704 was the fourth 24 mariengroschen for this state. Equal to two-thirds thaler, it was struck steadily until 1834. No mintmaster appears on this coin. The wild man is the most common design but a few were issued with the leaping stallion reverse, including KM 615, with mintmaster's initals HCH.
