Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1699-RB thaler Dav-6389
This specimen was lot 55490 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. Taler, 1699-RB. Zellerfeld Mint. Rudolph August & Anton Ulrich. Extremely Fine Details -- Polished. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." Rudolf August was the older brother and inherited the title on the death of August II in 1666. Interested in art and hunting, he delegated affairs of state to his brother Anton Ulrich, a situation he formalized in 1685 by making him co-ruler. Three different thalers were struck in 1699: KM 577/Dav-6395 struck 1688-1703, KM 593/Dav-6389, shown here, struck 1691-99; and KM 628/Dav-6390 struck 1699 only, scarce.
