Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1696 6 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 74626 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 6 Mariengroschen, 1696. Zellerfeld Mint; mm: three stars. Rudolph August & Anton Ulrich. PCGS AU-58. An elegant minor that resides at the cusp of Mint State status, this alluringly toned example yields mostly light gray surfaces that deepen to cobalt and magenta nearer the peripheries. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Ex: Springfield Collection, Part 2 (Bowers & Ruddy - 12/1981) Lot # 1335." This type was struck without mintmark 1686-1700. It is priced rather higher than the equivalent six mariengroschen with the leaping stallion reverse (KM 606 and KM 622).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
