Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1695-RB thaler Dav-6389
This specimen was lot 74462 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. Taler, 1695-RB. Zellerfeld Mint. Rudolph August & Anton Ulrich. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. Despite the noted cleaning, this specimen was evenly well-struck on a problem-free flan, its detail only softened at the high points by the light wear as noted by the grade. Very attractive. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This is another in the long series of "wild man" thalers struck in Brunswick-Luneburg and Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This one is recorded for 1691-99 and is common.
