Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74623
SB1122-74623r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74623 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 12 Mariengroschen, 1695. Zellerfeld Mint; mm: three stars. Rudolph August & Anton Ulrich. PCGS MS-63. Just a hint of striking weakness is observed on this otherwise highly attractive and exceedingly Choice minor, presenting mostly gray surfaces and rather intense golden-magenta toning near the edges--an aspect that comes alive when cradled back and forth in one's hand. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1686-1703 and is uncommon. Twelve mariengroschen made one third of a thaler or half a gulden. No mintmaster appears on this coin. The equivalent one-third thaler with the leaping stallion reverse (KM 612) exists but is very rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-570; Welter-2086.
