Künker sale 354, lot 5437

This specimen was lot 5437 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €4,200 (about US$5,845 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Friedrich Ulrich, 1613-1634. 1/2 Reichstaler 1633, Zellerfeld. Ausbeute der Grube St. Jakob in Lauthenthal. Preussag Collection (Auktion London Coin Galleries/Künker 2) 1079. Von großer Seltenheit. Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Patina, fast vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 46, Osnabrück 1999, Nr. 3432. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Frederick Ulrich, 1613-34, half thaler of 1633, Zellerfeld mint, for the St. Jacob's mine. Extremely rare, attractive example with fine patina, about extremely fine.)

St. Jacob (Jacobus) gehörte zum Kreis der zwölf Apostel und war später Schutzheiliger der Pilger. Der Legende nach soll er in Spanien gewirkt haben. Über seinem angeblichen Grab wurde eine Kirche erbaut, um die herum die Stadt Santiago de Compostela entstand, die bereits seit dem Mittelalter einer der bekanntesten Wallfahrtsorte der Christenheit ist. (St. James (Jacobus) was one of the twelve apostles and was later the patron saint of pilgrims. According to legend, he is said to have worked in Spain. A church was built over his alleged grave, around which the city of Santiago de Compostela was built, which was one of the most famous places of pilgrimage in Christendom since the Middle Ages.)"

This type was struck 1632-33. Most coins struck to promote local mines were thalers with a few multiple thalers. Fractional coinage is most unusual.
