Künker sale 354, lot 5631

This specimen was lot 5631 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €2,800 (about US$3,897 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Georg Wilhelm, 1648-1665. Löser zu 1 1/4 Reichstalern 1662, Zellerfeld. Mit Wertpunze; Münzmeister Henning Schlüter. Attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, fast vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Erworben 1968 von H. Priesmeier. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg, George William, 1648-65, 1¼ thaler of 1662, Zellerfeld mint, with denomination punched in. Attractive example with handsome patina, about extremely fine.)"

Georg Wilhelm was promoted to duke of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle on the death of his brother Christian Ludwig in 1665 and he ruled in Celle until 1705. This rare type was struck 1661-62. Some examples (KM 74.2) have the denomination punched as "5/4" instead of "1¼" as shown here.
