"BRAUNSCHWEIG-CALENBERG-HANNOVER, Georg Wilhelm, 1648-1665. Reichstaler 1662, Zellerfeld. Hübsche Patina, fast vorzüglich. (duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg, George William, 1648-65, thaler of 1662, Zellerfeld mint. Handsome patina, about extremely fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 73277 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[2] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg & Luneburg (Celle). Taler, 1662-HS. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg II Wilhelm. PCGS AU-53. Rather wholesome and original, this lightly handled survivor retains excellent overall detail and sports an enchanting tone that augments its appearance that much more. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." Christian Ludwig was duke in Calenberg 1641-48 and in Celle 1648-65. His younger brother Georg Wilhelm was duke in Calenberg 1648-65 and in Celle 1665-1705. Ernst August's son George inherited Calenberg and Hannover in 1698, Celle in 1705 and the throne of Great Britain in 1714. This type was struck 1654-64 and is one of many "wild man" thalers from this state.
