Brazil 1889 10000 reis
The first specimen was lot 1302 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $1840. The catalog description[1] noted, "1889 10,000 reis. MS-64 (NGC). Capped head of Liberty to left in circle, legends and date around/stars of the Southern Cross constellation in starry circle on five-pointed star, legends, denomination around. Light yellow gold with bold lustre. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." The second specimen was lot 12387 in Heritage sale 397 (New York, January 2006), where it sold for $431.25. The catalog description[2] noted, "Republic gold 10000 Reis 1889, lustrous AU, very lightly cleaned. Scarce type." This type, struck 1889-1922 during the early republic, is, with the 20000 réis, the last gold coin struck for circulation in Brazil. This date is one of the more common. Most were retained in bank vaults as backing for paper currency and therefore circulated very little but commonly come heavily bagmarked.
Recorded mintage: 7,302.
Specification: 8.96 g, 0.917 fine gold, .264 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 8.98 grams, 22.90 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 496, Fr-125.
