Brazil 1888 10000 reis
This specimen was lot 30102 in Heritage sale 3105 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brazil: Pedro II gold 10000 Reis 1888 MS61 NGC, Rio de Janeiro mint. Second type, no pearl on central meridian in globe. Exhibiting fully-struck motifs upon still lustrous fields. Ex. SNB (Brazilian Numismatic Society) Auction (December 1996, lot 1051). From the Petropolis Collection, Part III." This type, struck 1853-89, is among the moderately priced gold coins of the Empire of Brazil. It is part of the second reform of the coinage under the Empire; the first, in 1835, revalued the Spanish American peso from 960 réis to 1200 réis. The second reform of 1848 raised the peso to 2000 réis, where it remained until 1900.
