This specimen was lot 73206 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 500 Reis, 1889. Rio de Janerio Mint. Pedro II. PCGS MS-64. This beautiful near-Gem stunner balances radiant luster and golden colored highlights in a delicate dance of subtle artistry. Some evidence of handling is present in the fields, wholly coherent for the grade." This type was struck 1876 and 1886-89. Pedro II, who had advocated for the abolition of slavery, was overthrown in 1889 and a republic instituted. The new regime had 4,541,000 made of the 500 réis of a new design (KM 494).
