Brazil 1889 500 reis KM-480

from the Stack's Bowers 2022 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73206

This specimen was lot 73206 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $168. The catalog description^[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 500 Reis, 1889. Rio de Janerio Mint. Pedro II. PCGS MS-64. This beautiful near-Gem stunner balances radiant luster and golden colored highlights in a delicate dance of subtle artistry. Some evidence of handling is present in the fields, wholly coherent for the grade." This type was struck 1876 and 1886-89. Pedro II, who had advocated for the abolition of slavery, was overthrown in 1889 and a republic instituted. The new regime had 4,541,000 made of the 500 réis of a new design (KM 494).
