This specimen was lot 23158 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $1,762.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 20000 Reis 1889, AU Details - Surface Hairlines NGC. Lightly cleaned with nearly full detail remaining. A pleasing example when all is considered." This type, struck 1889-1922 during the early republic, is, with the 10000 réis, the last gold coin struck for circulation in Brazil. It is much more available than its smaller sister. Most survivors are graded AU because of heavy bagmarks rather than wear.
Recorded mintage: 91,000.
Specification: 17.93 g, 0.917 fine gold, .528 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: KM 497, Russo-711, Fr-124.
