The first specimen was lot 8925 in Ponterio sale 151 (Baltimore, November 2009), where it sold for $948.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 2000 Reis, 1897. Lightly cleaned. Lustrous EXTREMELY FINE-ALMOST UNCIRCULATED." This date is the most common of the three known (1891, 1896 and 1897) but is still expensive. After 1900, this denomination was reduced to 20 grams, with the likely result that older issues in government vaults were melted.
Recorded mintage: 160,000.
Specification: 25.5 g, .917 silver, .751 troy oz ASW.
Catalog reference: KM 498.
