This specimen was lot 71456 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 200 Reis, 1897. Rio de Janeiro Mint. NGC MS-63. An attractive Choice issue with full cartwheel like luster and light champagne like toning." This type was struck 1889, 1893-1900. The 1900 is the only scarce date. It is accompanied by similar 100 réis (KM 492). It is much scarcer in nice condition than the SCWC indicates, despite the large mintage. The 200 réis gradually shrank until its abolition in 1942 with the reform of the coinage in that year.
Recorded mintage: 2,405,000.
Specification: copper-nickel, 14.8 g, 32.5 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-493.
