This specimen was lot 29108 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $1,175. The catalog description[1] noted, "João V gold 4000 Reis 1727-R AU Details (Mount Removed) NGC, Rio de Janeiro mint. A well detailed and attractively toned specimen, still retaining luster in parts of the obverse. The mount mark is faint and not too distracting. A scarce gold denomination." This type was struck at Rio 1707-27. The weight of the 4000 réis was lowered from 10.75 g to 8.07 g in 1749; consequently, the earlier issues are quite scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Catalog reference: KM 102, Fr-27, Russo-179.
