This type was struck between 1724 and 1727 in Minas Gerais to consume the large quantities of gold coming out of the mines in that region of Brazil. While the 4000 réis is relatively available, this type, the only 20000 réis issued during colonial times, is very scarce. This massive coin, one of the largest gold coins ever issued for circulation, always brings gasps of awe when it appears in auction. This specimen was lot 475 in Ponterio sale 145.
