This specimen was lot 23180 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $5,581.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "João V gold 10000 Reis 1727M, AU55 NGC, extremely bold and attractive, luster in the legends. Scarce date and grade." This type was struck between 1724 and 1727 in Minas Gerais to consume the large quantities of gold coming out of the mines in that region. While the 4000 réis is relatively available, this type, the only 10000 réis issued during colonial times, is very scarce.
