JE164-1074r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1074 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €80 (about US$111 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Charles II (1665-1700), AR escalin, 1699, Anvers. D/ Lion deb. à g., ten. une épée et l'écu ovale d'Autriche-Bourgogne. R/ Écu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne. Très rare. Taches au droit. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Charles II, 1665-1700, silver escalin of 1699, Antwerp mint. Obverse: lion rampant left, holding a sword and the oval arms of Austria-Hungary; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross. Very rare, stains on the obverse, Very Fine.)"

This type was struck 1698-1700 at Antwerp and the 1699 is the scarcest date. As the degenerate Charles II lay dying, all of Europe awaited the inevitable war over his inheritance, of which Brabant was one of the chief prizes.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 5.25 g, 0.582 fine silver, 25 mm diameter, this specimen 5,26 g.

Catalog reference: KM 119.1, G.H. 352-1a; W. -; VH 717.
