Jean Elsen sale 144, lot 1271

This specimen was lot 1271 in Jean Elsen sale 144 (Brussels, March 2020), where it sold for €140 (about US$185 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Karel II (1665-1700), AR vier stuiver, 1698, Brugge. Vz/ Gekroond stokkenkruis met een vuurijzer tussen het jaartal en het juweel van het Gulden Vlies. Kz/ Gekroond wapenschild. Zeldzaam. Fraai à Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, Charles II, 1665-1700, silver four stuivers of 1689, Bruges mint. Obverse: crowned Burgundian cross with the jewels of the Golden Fleece around; reverse: crowned arms. Scarce, Fine to Very Fine.)"

This type was struck 1698 and 1700 for Charles II. It does not have a high catalog value but is seldom seen. It was accompanied by an escalin (KM 95), half patagon (KM 90, rare) and a quadruple souverain d'or (KM 93, very rare). As the degenerate Charles II lay dying, all of Europe awaited the inevitable war over his inheritance, of which Flanders was one of the chief prizes.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.90 g, .385 fine silver, this specimen 4,41 g.

Catalog reference: KM 94, G.H. 353-4; V.H. 717.
