Brabant in 1559, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 1598 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €400 (about US$570 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Charles II (1665-1700), AR double patard, 1698, Anvers. D/ Croix ornée, un lion en coeur, cantonnée de deux lions et deux couronnes. R/ Ecu couronné. Très rare dans cette qualité. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Charles II, 1665-1700, silver double patard of 1698, Antwerp mint. Obverse: ornate cross, lion at the center, cantonned with two lions and two crowns; reverse: crowned arms. Very rare in this quality, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This type was struck 1698 only and is rare. As the degenerate Charles II lay dying, all of Europe awaited the inevitable war over his inheritance, of which Brabant was one of the chief prizes.
