JE164-1073r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1073 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €340 (about US$473 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Charles II (1665-1700), AR demi-patagon, 1698, Anvers. Nouveau type. D/ Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne, accostée du monogramme royal, ornée du bijou de la Toison d'or. R/ Écu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Très rare. Défaut de flan. Beau à Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Charles II, 1665-1700, silver half patagon, Antwerp mint, new type. Obverse: Burgundian cross below a crown divides the royal monogram, decorated with the jewels of the Golden Fleece; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Very rare, planchet defect, Fine - Very Fine.)"

This half patagon was milled 1694 and 1698 and was a considerable improvement over the crude issues of before. Alas, war and economic depression in the Low Countries prevented large issues and these late half patagons are all rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 14.05 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen 13,41 g.
