Brabant in 1559, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 1595 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €360 (about US$513 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Charles II (1665-1700), AR escalin, 1698, Anvers. D/ Lion deb. à g., ten. une épée et l'écu ovale d'Autriche-Bourgogne. R/ Ecu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne. Petites taches. Rare dans cette qualité. Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Charles II, 1665-1700, silver escalin of 1698, Antwerp mint. Obverse: lion rampant left, bearing a sword and the oval arms of Austria-Burgundy; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross. Minor stains, rare in this quality, Extremely Fine.)"

This type was struck 1698-99 only and is rare. Large numbers of escalins or schellings would be issued in the 1750's, under Austrian rule.
