This specimen was lot 1004 in Jean Elsen sale 115 (Brussels, December 2012) where it sold for €3600 (about US$5,495 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Karel II (1665-1700), AR dukaton, 1694, Brugge. Derde type. Op dubbel gewicht geslagen. Droit: Bb. van de koning radié met mantel en halsketting van het Gulden Vlies. Revers: Gekroond wapenschild gesteund door twee leeuwen. Onderaan het juweel van het Gulden Vlies. Zeer Zeldzaam. Krasjes op vz. Kleine randdefekten. Mooie patina. Ex HSA 18662. Zeer Fraai à Prachtig. (County of Flanders, Charles II (1665-1700), silver ducaton of 1694, Bruges mint, third type, double weight. Obverse: draped bust of the king with the Golden Fleece. Reverse: crowned arms supported by two lions. Very rare, cracks and edge defects, nice patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"

Ducatons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. The regular ducatons (Dav-4488) of this bust of Charles II are rare, the double ducatons are extremely rare.
