Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 646

This specimen was lot 646 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €600 (about US$780 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Charles II (1665-1700), AR patagon, 1694, Bruxelles. Nouveau type. Frappe médaille. Tranche cordée. D/ Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne, accostée du monogramme royal, ornée du bijou de la Toison d'or. Avec INDIARUM dans la légende. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Légère fin de plaque. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Charles II, 1665-1700, silver patagon of 1694, Brussels mint, new type, medal axis, reeded edge. Obverse: Burgundian cross under a crown divides the royal monogram, adorned with the jewels of the Golden Fleece, with INDIARUM in the legend; reverse: crowned arms, Order chain around. Very Fine.)"

This patagon was struck at Antwerp 1695, 1699-1700 and at Brussels 1686-88, 1692-94 (angel face mintmark, shown here). Both mints are rare, reflecting the economic decline of the region under relentless French attacks. Charles' death in 1700 marked the extinction of the Spanish Hapsburgs and the start of the War of the Spanish Succession. After fourteen years of war, the Spanish empire was partitioned by the Treaty of Utrecht. Belgium went to Austria, mostly to keep it out of the hands of the French.

Reported Mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 28.10 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen 28,16 g.
