Brabant 1691(a) patagon Dav-4492
This specimen was lot 54 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"BELGIEN Brabant, Herzogtum, Karl II. 1665-1700. Patagon 1691, Brüssel. Äusserst selten. Gutes sehr schön. (duchy of Brabant, Charles II, 1665-1700, patagon of 1691, Brussels mint. Extremely rare, Good Very Fine.)"
One patagon was 48 sols, stuivers or patards. Starting in 1686, the Antwerp and Brussels mints began milling coins instead of hammering them but, as can be seen here, hammered patagons continued in production for several years more. This is a one year type marked by the obverse legend "CAROLVS·II·D·G·HISPANIARVM·" instead of the usual "CAROL·II·D·G·HISP·".
