Jean Elsen sale 154, lot 1290
Brabant in 1559, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 1290 in Jean Elsen sale 154 (Brussels, March 2023), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,424 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR ducaton, 1632, Anvers. Premier type. D/ B. cuir. à d., une grande fraise au col. R/ Ecu couronné, tenu par deux lions. En dessous, le bijou de la Toison d'or. Belle patine. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver ducaton of 1632, Antwerp mint, first type. Obverse: armored bust right with large ruffed collar; reverse: crowned arms supported by two lions, the jewel of the Golden Fleece below. Nice patina, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

Ducatons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and patagons. The type shown here was struck at the Antwerp mint 1622-23, 1631-36 (hand mintmark, shown here) and at Brussels. A very similar coin was struck for Flanders (Dav-4446), Tournai (Dav-4450) and Artois (Dav-4448). The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, but less so than the patagons.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 32.48 g, 0.944 fine silver, this specimen 32,35 g.
