Jean Elsen sale 157, lot 615

This specimen was lot 615 in Jean Elsen sale 157 (Brussels, December 2023), where it sold for €120 (about US$155 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR quart de patagon, 1632, Anvers. D/ Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Very Fine.)"

The SCWC lists four dates from Antwerp for this scarce type: 1623, 1632, 1645 and 1656, of which the 1632 is given the highest catalog value. Brussels struck this type more frequently 1623-60. Altho the half and quarter patagons are much scarcer than the patagons, they bring less at auction.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 7.03 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen 6,57 g.

Catalog reference: KM 54.1, G.H. 331-1; Delm-309; W. 1009; V.H. 647.
