Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74686

This specimen was lot 74686 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPANISH NETHERLANDS. Brabrant. Patagon, 1632. Antwerp Mint. Philip IV. NGC VF-35. While displaying some evidence of circulation, this charming example yields strong details and much charm throughout. A pleasing and wholesome example certain to fill a whole in a world crown collection." Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. This type was struck at the Antwerp mint 1622-65 (hand mintmark, shown here), Brussels 1633-39 and 1645-60 (angel face mintmark) and at the Maastricht mint 1625-31. A very similar coin was struck for Flanders (Dav-4457). The SCWC notes the Flemish issues as the most common, followed by the Brabant issue, tho none are plentiful today. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.
