SB1122-71174r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71174 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob Real, 1686-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Pedro de Villar (VR). Charles II. PCGS EF-45. This Real was crudely struck on an irregular flan, but because it is quite well-preserved, it offers a pleasing amount of detail. The obverse displays the denomination, date, both assayer's monograms, and parts of each mintmark along with a small portion of the outer legend. The reverse shows the denomination, mintmark, monogram, and date all rather clearly and fully. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This type was struck in the name of the degenerate Charles II 1667-1701. Assayer de Villar stamped coins with a "V" 1679-84 and a "VR" 1684-97.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 2.65 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-7248, KM-23; Cal-279.
