Áureo y Calicó sale 347, lot 190

This specimen was lot 190 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €3,800 (about US$5,015 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1686. Carlos II. Potosí. VR. 2 reales. En forma de corazón. Triple fecha, una parcial. Perforación habilmente reparada. Muy bella. Muy rara y más así. ¿Única conocida?. EBC. (kingdom of Spain, Charles II, two reales of 1686, Potosí mint, "heart" type. Three dates, one partial. Hole expertly repaired. Very handsome, very rare thus, perhaps unique. Extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1667-1701 for Charles II. It superseded the shield/cross type which was discredited in the debasement scandal of the 1630's and 1640's. Hearts, struck for presentation, are all rare and nearly always come holed. This one is genuine (mint-made); most offered are light weight, indicating that they were fabricated by jewelers.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 5,74 g.

Catalog reference: KM 24, AC. 379, Cayón-7377.
