Bolivia 1685-P VR real
This specimen was lot 71173 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob Real, 1685-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Pedro de Villar (VR). Charles II. PCGS Genuine--Salt Water Damage, VF Details. A pleasing Real piece that displays clear details despite the noted saltwater damage. The obverse shows both mintmarks, most of both assayer's monograms, the denomination, and the date. The reverse was struck somewhat off-center, but this allowed the last past of the monarch's name and ordinal to appear on the flan. This shipwreck minor has abundant eye-appeal. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Ex: 1715 Plate Fleet." This type was struck in the name of the degenerate Charles II 1667-1701. Assayer de Villar stamped coins with a "V" 1679-84 and a "VR" 1684-97.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.38 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 3.02 g.
