Aureo y Calicó sale 422, lot 2691

This specimen was lot 2691 in Aureo y Calicó sale 422 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 65 € (about US$84 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1688. Carlos II. Potosí. VR. 1 real. Doble fecha, una parcial. BC+ [two dates, one partial. Fine or better]." This type, struck 1667-1701, is probably the most common one real cob. It is the only one that can be collected by date. This example shows corrosion (most do), which likely accounts for this specimen's light weight. Assayer de Villar stamped coins 1679-97; issues after 1684 used a "VR" monogram.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 1,70 g.

Catalog reference: KM 23, AC. 281, Cayón-7262.
