Sincona sale 34, lot 4291
Künker sale 406, lot 4597, same die break on the reverse

The first specimen was lot 4291 in Sincona sale 34 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 2,000 CHF (about US$2,374 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA. Karl VI. 1711-1740 Taler 1712. Prag Münzmeister Ignaz Anton Putz. Selten. Fast vorzüglich. Schöne Tönung. Kl. Stempelfehler Rv. (Holy Roman Empire, Charles VI, 1711-40, thaler of 1712, Prague mint, mintmaster Ignaz Anton Putz. Rare, About extremely fine, beautiful toning, a few die flaws on the reverse.)"

The second specimen was lot 4597 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €3,600 (about US$4,724 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Karl VI. 1711-1740. Reichstaler 1712, Prag. Münzmeister Ignaz Anton Putz. RR Hübsche Patina, sehr schön +. (Austria, Charles VI, 1711-40, thaler of 1712, Prague mint. Very rare, handsome patina, very fine or better.)"

Charles was the younger brother of Joseph I and was not expected to inherit the imperial throne. As such, he was put forward as the rival candidate of Philip V for the Spanish crown. His brother's unexpected death in 1711 made him the Holy Roman Emperor and his anti-French allies quickly lost interest in placing him on the Spanish throne. This type was struck in Prague in 1712 along with the very similar Dav-1066, which has the obverse legend "·SEMP·AU·". The first specimen was incorrectly catalogued as Dav-1066 but is struck from the same dies as the second specimen (note the die break on the eagle on the reverse).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, the first specimen 28.64 g, the second specimen 28.45 g.

Catalog reference: KM 660 (listed under Bohemia), Dav-1067; Dietiker 1006; Voglh. 262 III; Halacka 1795.
