Bavaria 1799 thaler Dav-1966A
The first specimen was lot 29833 in Heritage sale 3040 (Chicago, April 2015), where it sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Bavaria. Karl Theodor Taler 1799 MS64 NGC. Rare quality for the type, with fully-struck details that are awash in classic patina and surfaces that display an outstanding amount of incandescent luster. Typical reverse adjustment marks are present across the central devices, but the Madonna and child motif is still in far better condition than typically encountered. Virtually unseen at this level of mint state, highly interesting as such. Ex. Ernst Otto Horn Collection." The second specimen was lot 1350 in Stephen Album sale 27 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2017), where it sold for $258.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "BAVARIA: Karl Theodor, 1777-1799, AR thaler, 1799. Madonna and Child, light reverse adjustment marks, somewhat prooflike, About Unc." The third specimen was lot 2068 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €280 (about US$397 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[3] noted,
"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · BAYERN, KURFÜRSTENTUM, SEIT 1806 KÖNIGREICH Karl Theodor, 1777-1799. Konv.-Taler 1799, München. Hübsche Patina, vorzüglich +. (Germany, electorate of Bavaria, Charles Theodore, 1777-99, convention thaler of 1799, Munich mint. Handsome patina, extremely fine or better.)"
