Bavaria 1799 thaler Dav-1975
This specimen was lot 3589 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €2,500 (about US$3,272 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BAYERN, SEIT 1623 KURFÜRSTENTUM, SEIT 1806 KÖNIGREICH: Maximilian I. (IV.) Joseph, 1799-1806-1825. Konv.-Taler 1799. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Prachtexemplar. Hübsche Patina, fast Stempelglanz. (Germany, electorate of Bavaria, Charles Theodore, 1777-99, Maximilian Joseph, 1799-1825, convention thaler of 1799. Rare in this condition, cabinet piece, handsome patina, about uncirculated.)"
This is the first thaler of the new elector (and later king) Maximilian Joseph. Thalers of Karl Theodor (Dav-1966A) also exist for 1799.
