This specimen was lot 23130 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $18,212.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "Elizabeth II gold $2,500 1974, National arms/Two flamingos, with date below, Proof 69 Ultra Cameo NGC (jumbo holder). Near-flawless surfaces, with a hint of orange-golden peripheral toning. The first year of issue and a mintage of 204 pieces." This enormous object is a medallion masquerading as a coin. At $1460/oz, its melt value is $17,520.
