Sincona sale 23, lot 2274

This specimen was lot 2274 in Sincona sale 23 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,256 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Baden, Grossherzogtum, Friedrich I. 1852-1907 5 Mark 1894. Karlsruhe, Vorzüglich-FDC. (grand duchy of Baden, Frederick I (1852-1907), five mark of 1894, Karlsruhe mint, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This regular issue five mark was emitted 1891-1902. It is not rare but expensive in nice condition as is the silver two mark.

Recorded mintage: 60,515 plus a few proofs.

Specification: 27.77 g, 0.900 fine silver, 38 mm diameter, this specimen 27.77 g.
