Prussia 1894-A 5 mark Dav-789
This specimen was lot 33658 in Heritage sale 3106 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $9,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Prussia. Wilhelm II Proof 5 Mark 1894-A PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC. An unexpected and wholly spectacular Proof encrusted with sharp wire rims, practically jet-black fields sharply contrasting the thick layers of icy white frost glistening on the raised designs. A quick research revealed no comparable pieces of this date in Ultra Cameo, and we anticipate this jewel becoming a target of ferocious bidding before it ends up ensconced in an elite tier collection for many years to come." This type was struck 1891-1908. It superseded a similar type with a different reverse (Dav-788).
Recorded mintage: 440,203, a somewhat better date.
Specification: 27.77 g, 0.900 fine silver, lettered edge, 38 mm diameter.
