This specimen was lot 40541 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $1,586. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Prussia. 5 Mark, 1888-A. NGC MS-64. One year type. Toned." This type is quite a bit scarcer than that issued for his late father, Friedrich II (Dav-787). The later issue with a redesigned reverse (Dav-789) is common.

Recorded mintage: 56,000 plus 200,000 for Friedrich II.

Specification: 27.77 g, 0.900 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-788; KM-513.
