Stack's Bowers September 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74138
SB923-74138r.jpg
this map of Baden in 1786 shows many of the Hapsburg enclaves in the Breisgau and north of lake Constance

This specimen was lot 74138 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Further Austria. 3 Kreutzer, 1793-H. Gunzburg Mint. Franz II. NGC MS-65. Orange-russet and pinkish-maroon coloration comes alive when dipped under a light source. Otherwise this piece exhibits attractive and original silver gray surfaces that show nary a contact mark nor nick. Quite a SCARCE type that, while usually well preserved, is seldom offered at the major auction houses." Further Austria ("Vorderosterreich") was the administrative name for the miscellaneous properties, such as Breisgau, held by the Hapsburgs in southwest Germany before the Napoleonic Wars. Some of them had been in Hapsburg hands since the family were petty barons in Switzerland. All were ceded to Baden or Wurttemberg at the Congress of Vienna. Small change was struck for them in the eighteenth century; the largest denomination was six kreuzer. This type was struck 1792-95.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 7.7 g, copper.

Catalog reference: KM-22 (listed under Germany, Further Austria).
